If there is one field in the country that has grown tremendously over the last couple of years, it is travel. The awareness among people in India is increasing with families and friends wanting to go out for a vacation and with the presence of so many MNCs here, official trips are very much there. Equipped with a degree in one of the several courses in travel and tourism, one can hope to make a successful career out of it. There are various courses which are related to travel and tourism. Some of these courses focus on particular aspects of different sectors. One of these is that of Air Ticketing. This course aims at giving training to students in the areas of booking and reserving tickets for scheduled airline flights. The aspirants learn the tactics of guiding and helping the customers in planning their travel route and other necessary arrangements for the itinerary. They also help in the matters related to timetables, airline schedules, reference guides and tariff books.

There are mainly diploma and certificate courses available in air ticketing. The best part about this course is that, in a world of cutthroat competition, marks of class X are enough to make one eligible for this course. There are no entrance exams as such which is a huge relief for students as this takes off the stress for many students while giving them a career in which they can establish themselves. But certain pre-requisites for the course are excellent communication skills and good etiquettes. The main course highlights are an introduction to aviation industry, an introduction of ground services, familiarity with airport terminology, airline codes, IATA ( International Air Transport Association), DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation ). Students are also told about the check in/checkout process , boarding process, arrivals/departures , documentation, weight and balance, ramp handling and aircraft loading, carriage policies, description of important travel, international passenger handling , practical training on customer service at the airport, personality development , communication skills improvement, interview preparation , amongst others.

There are various private institutes which offer this course but there are a few government institutes as well. For instance Delhi University has a college of Vocational Studies which offers a course along these lines. Then there are various others in different parts of India like Goa University, Punjab University, and etc.The initial salary is quite decent varying from airline to airline. But usually people can manage to get a salary of '20,000 to 30,000 per month. This is basically an entry job into the airline sector. Depending on the skills and experience the package increases. Many students choose to do an MBA in Travel and Tourism after a course in air ticketing.

According to career counselor Meenu Bhargava, "The travel industry is booming and there are various job opportunities for students in this sector. The air ticketing course was not so well-known a few years back but slowly, people have become familiar with it. Many students are showing an interest in this field as with a few years of experience the pay scale can go up. Of course this course is a little expensive since mostly private institutions offer it, but the job opportunities are immense specially with the new airlines coming up."
